You can’t sell your T-shirt without defining your audience

Chances are that you will not be able to sell your t-shirt if it is a standard t-shirt that caters to a large but generic audience. The trick to selling your t-shirt is in targeting a small but niche target group. A ‘niche’ is a part of a large audience, who are interested in a very specific thing. By recognizing these precise groups, you can design t-shirts that are custom-made for their interests.

When you choose a niche audience and take the time to understand their interest and inclinations, you will have a many options in front of you. You will quickly realise that you no longer have to struggle for design ideas for your t-shirts; instead you will instantly know what will attract your special audience. All this because you have taken the time to know and understand your small but specific audience as opposed to reaching for a larger more general group of people with a common, broad-spectrum t-shirt.

Lessons learnt:

  1. Find a small niche audience
  2. Find out what interests them

Before, you start designing or thinking of slogans to put on your t-shirt – put together a group, those with a shared interest, people talking about a controversy, a group that you’re a part of or a social cause and look for common areas that will bind people together and also stand them apart from the rest.

Here are a few examples:

  1. Kishore Kumar Fans
  2. Cricket fans who love Sir Ravindra Jadeja
  3. LGBTQ in Mumbai participating in 2015 Pride Walk
  4. Lovers of Hyderabadi Biryani

So, before you start designing your t-shirt, align your design to a niche group who will buy your t-shirt. If you’re a designer looking opening your own design store, your very first step in the launching a successful campaign, is classifying and categorizing a group of potential buyers for your unique tees.
